Folklore and Placename Collection

Localities are increasingly appreciating the rich well of oral history often held by older members of their communities. Many are thus preserving this resource for future generations which commonly pertains to the history of the locality including personalities, happenings and placenames.

In particular, placenames of townlands, lakes, fields, hills and rivers can shine a light onto the heritage of an area including natural and man-made features as well as land ownership and historic events. The oral collection of placenames can often be cross referenced with historic maps and along with general folklore can form a wonderful local heritage resource.

Ardú Heritage Development can assist with all aspects of folklore and placename collection such as recording, training and archive development.
